California Hit-and-Run Accidents
In California, it is a crime to leave the scene of an accident. Regardless of which party was at fault, everyone who is involved in a collision is required to remain at the scene and wait for law enforcement to arrive. Under California law, a hit-and-run can be either a felony or a misdemeanor. If the crash resulted in injuries, the crime is elevated to a felony. If the accident caused only property damage or did not involve another car, the charge may be a misdemeanor instead.
More importantly, many hit-and-run drivers in California can face civil liability for their actions. A driver who flees the scene in the first place usually does so because they know they are at fault for the accident. Careless and reckless drivers cause many accidents and sometimes will leave the area to try and avoid responsibility for their actions. These drivers were often acting in a negligent or reckless manner at the time the crash took place, and further investigation usually confirms that they were at fault.
If you or a family member have been injured or affected by a hit-and-run crash, it is very important to have an attorney by your side. Under California law, you may have legal rights, including the right to receive compensation for your injuries. Hit-and-run accidents can result in serious injuries with substantial damages. Therefore, it is vital to ensure that you receive the appropriate compensation.
