Pomona, CA – One Killed, Multiple Hurt in Fatal DUI Crash on 71 Fwy
Pomona, CA (July 4, 2023) – A suspected DUI crash led to one death and several injuries in Pomona on Sunday night, July 2nd. The crash took place just before 10:00 p.m. on the 71 Freeway, just north of Rio Ranch Road.
According to a report from the Pomona Police Department, a flatbed tow truck was traveling northbound when a southbound driver crossed into its lane of travel. The tow truck and vehicle collided head-on with one another. After the head-on collision, a southbound minivan collided head-on with the disabled tow truck.
Multiple occupants of the minivan were taken to a nearby hospital. One victim, described only as a man, succumbed to his injuries. There is no update on the other occupants at this time, though it is believed they were all family members. There were no other injuries reported.
The driver of the original car that collided with the tow truck was identified as 33-year-old Mark Shoemate. Following an investigation, police determined that Shoemate was impaired. He was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI.
