Hit-and-Run Accidents in California
It is a felony in California to leave the scene of an injury accident. Offenders who violate this law can face jail time, fines, and probation. In addition, they can also be held civilly liable for their actions. Despite the fact that tough laws are in place, many drivers choose to ignore them anyway. It is estimated that about 20% of all reported traffic accidents in California are hit-and-run collisions. Many hit-and-run accidents result in serious and catastrophic injuries and even death. In fact, drivers who flee the scene of these collisions often do so in order to avoid accepting responsibility for their actions.
If you or a family member have been a victim of a California hit-and-run accident, you should speak with a lawyer at the soonest possible time. Hit-and-run cases often present special questions of liability and recovery of damages. In some instances, the hit-and-run driver is never located. This can pose a problem for victims who are looking to recover compensation for their injuries. An experienced attorney can search for every available insurance policy in an effort to ensure that you are fully compensated for your injuries. Trying to handle a case on your own may result in compensation that is inadequate to cover your losses.
