California has the greatest number of registered motorcycles of any state in the country. It goes without saying that motorcycle riding is an activity that is enjoyed regularly by many Californians. However, this is also an activity that comes with great risk of death or serious injuries. According to a statewide mapping system utilized by the California Highway Patrol, there were 4,762 motorcycle accidents reported in California last year with 4,288 of these crashes resulting in injuries and 474 ending in fatalities. These numbers tell us that approximately 90 percent of California motorcycle crashes will cause injuries for the victims and bout 10 percent will result in death.
With these sobering statistics in mind, it is important to take a look at what causes many motorcycle crashes to occur. In California, a large number of accidents occur because of negligent and careless driving. Motorcycle crashes are no exception to this rule. Speeding drivers, impairment, and distraction contribute to the large majority of accidents. In many cases, the motorcyclist is not to blame as the driver of the other vehicle is actually responsible for the collision.
