Fiery crash after apparent car race on 110 Freeway in South LA

A fiery multi-car crash on the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles, which appears to have been triggered by an illegal street race was captured on video and is now under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
The fiery collision occurred early Sunday morning, around 2:30 am, near the Florence Avenue exit, when two vehicles reportedly raced northbound and collided with unsuspecting motorists. Authorities say the crash involved four cars in total.
In the unsettling footage, the two speeding cars weave dangerously through traffic, cutting off other vehicles on the freeway. One of the racing cars slams into the rear of a non-participating vehicle, sending it spinning into the lane. That crash, in turn causes a second innocent vehicle to strike the freeway wall. The other speeding car manages to escape the collision entirely and flees the scene.
Despite the dramatic visuals, no one was transported to hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
At this time, the extent of any injuries remains unclear. The California Highway Patrol has launched an investigation that is being treated as a hit-and-run, and no arrests have been reported.
This incident is part of a larger pattern: street racing and freeway takeovers have been on the rise in Los Angeles since the pandemic, peaking in 2020 with 912 reported incidents, compared to 319 in 1029 and 482 in 2023, according to law enforcement statistics.

Ongoing Safety Concerns
Street races and freeway stunts continue to pose serious dangers across the region. As vehicles speed and stunt near civilian traffic, public safety is increasingly at risk. Law enforcement has emphasized efforts to curb illegal racing and hold drivers accountable.
What’s Next
The CHP investigation remains active. Authorities are reviewing the video, interviewing witnesses and seeking surveillance to identify the drivers involved in the race and crash. As of now, it is unknown whether citations or charges will follow. If caught, the offending drivers could face felony hit-and-run charges and reckless driving penalties under California Vehicle Code Sections 23103 and 20001.
Recent Trends Highlight Escalation
Data from the LAPD and community task forces indicate a significant surge in street racing in early 2024, with 176 reported races occurring between January and March.
This marks an increase of nearly 50% compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, recorded incidents of takeovers rose slightly to approximately 190, heightening public safety concerns.
From 2020 to 2022, the LAPD recorded 16 fatalities related to street racing. In a retrospective review covering 2000 to 2017, investigators found at least 179 deaths nationwide associated with illegal racing events.
Furthermore, traffic violence more broadly surged: 336 died on L.A roads in 2023, with pedestrians making up over half of the fatalities.
