California Bicycle Accidents

California is a popular place for bicyclists. However, riding a bike in our state comes with a greater-than-normal level of danger. According to statistics, bicycle accidents make up approximately 4% of all reported traffic crashes in California. This number is about twice the national average. Between 2016 and 2018, 455 bicyclists were killed in California. In the last 15 years, the average number of riders killed each year has approximately doubled. Bicyclists are at high risk from drivers who are distracted, impaired, or otherwise not following traffic laws near the time of the crash. When an accident does happen it tends to be serious in nature due to the relative lack of protection for riders compared to other types of vehicles.

Immediately following a bicycle accident, it is common to experience overwhelming emotions and thoughts. If you or a loved one were seriously hurt in the accident, you may wonder if you will ever be able to regain your normal life. Additionally, you may be wondering about your legal rights. Under California law, an injured crash victim or their family can seek compensation for pain and suffering, medical bills, lost wages, and possibly more following an accident. The rules surrounding these cases can be complex and confusing and should be handled by a skilled bicycle accident lawyer.
