Los Angeles, CA - Teen Driver Dies, Man Hurt in Hit-and-Run on Foothill Blvd at Sayre St

Los Angeles, CA (November 28, 2022) – Authorities report that a teen driver was killed in a collision with a pickup truck in Sylmar.

The collision happened on Sunday just after 11:45 a.m. in the 13800 block of Foothill Boulevard, south of Sayre Street. The Los Angeles Police Department reports that a silver Ford Mustang heading south on Foothill Boulevard veered into head-on traffic.

Police now suspect the teen driver behind the wheel of the Mustang was trying to avoid colliding with a car that was backing out of a nearby parking lot.

The Mustang’s driver collided with a Toyota Tundra pickup truck as a result of the incident. The driver, an 18-year-old male, was declared dead at the scene, according to police.

The Los Angeles Fire Department transported the 58-year-old pickup truck driver to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the silver SUV that was apparently backing out of the parking lot is being sought by detectives. The police said that they suspected that the SUV driver was responsible for a non-contact traffic incident and failed to stop. Even if a car does not make contact with another vehicle during a collision, officials say it may still be deemed a hit-and-run if the driver causes a secondary crash and does not stop.

The police think the silver SUV was a model from the early 2000s. They said they were searching for a female driver and a male passenger, who may have been shopping at a nearby grocery store before leaving the parking lot in question.

An investigation is still ongoing at this time.

We send our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim. The injured victim and their loved ones are in our thoughts, and we wish for their complete recovery.

Fatalities in Los Angeles Car Accidents

Automobile collisions are an all-too-common event around the country, particularly in California. Because many of our cities were designed with the use of private automobiles in mind, dangerously packed roads and high-speed collisions are unavoidable. As a result, state and federal agencies have built automobile accident data gathering and analysis systems.

Despite the city’s significant efforts to reduce the frequency of fatal vehicle accidents, the number of fatal and injury-causing traffic events in Los Angeles is rising.

For instance, the Los Angeles Vision Zero campaign aimed to cut traffic-related deaths by 20{1370d1a44a2a36111fd8aac2ccbc5aad49bce4f615ec80e8124ffd285aa21fc2} quickly. In the first year of Vision Zero, traffic fatalities in Los Angeles soared by 43{1370d1a44a2a36111fd8aac2ccbc5aad49bce4f615ec80e8124ffd285aa21fc2}. In 2017, the second year Vision Zero was in effect in Los Angeles, the number of fatal crashes jumped by 22{1370d1a44a2a36111fd8aac2ccbc5aad49bce4f615ec80e8124ffd285aa21fc2}. What’s more, Los Angeles has the country’s highest incidence of fatal and injury-causing traffic accidents.
