Pedestrian Accidents in California
Pedestrian crashes take place at an alarming rate in California. Our state is more than 20% higher than the national average for fatal pedestrian accidents. Last year, approximately 900 pedestrians died in accidents on California’s roadways. This amounts to about 15% of all total pedestrian fatalities in the United States. It is not entirely clear why pedestrians in California seem to be at greater risk. However, crowded roadways and popular tourist spots in Southern California certainly mean that more pedestrians are going to be out and about on a daily basis when compared to other areas.
While a pedestrian accident can lead to serious and devastating injuries, victims should also be aware of their legal rights. In the aftermath of a pedestrian accident, it is important to determine who was at fault for the collision. The investigating officer will examine the scene, speak with witnesses, take photographs of the area, and try to reconstruct the collision. Following this, charges may be issued against the driver who caused the accident.
If you believe that you may have a claim, it is important to reach out to an experienced California pedestrian accident lawyer as soon as possible. The other driver’s insurance company may contact you and try to get you to agree to a quick settlement. This is often not in your best interest for a number of reasons. You should speak with a qualified lawyer before you sign anything presented to you by the insurance adjuster handling your case.
