Motorcycle Accidents in Los Angeles

Statistics on motorcycle accidents are in a class by themselves. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) distinguish motorcycle incidents from other types of vehicle accidents, largely because of their severity.

Unsurprisingly, the numbers are dismal: in 2019 alone, 5,014 motorcyclists were killed in road accidents. What’s more, drunk driving is rampant. In 2019, inebriated motorcyclists accounted for about 30{1370d1a44a2a36111fd8aac2ccbc5aad49bce4f615ec80e8124ffd285aa21fc2} of all motorcycle deaths, and in around 30{1370d1a44a2a36111fd8aac2ccbc5aad49bce4f615ec80e8124ffd285aa21fc2} of all fatal motorcycle accidents, the rider was speeding, which overlaps significantly with intoxicated riders.

Plus, approximately 30{1370d1a44a2a36111fd8aac2ccbc5aad49bce4f615ec80e8124ffd285aa21fc2} of motorcyclists involved in fatal collisions lacked proper motorcycle licenses. Researchers in the field of safety are now asking whether there is a connection between a motorcycle driver’s lack of license, alcohol, and excessive speed.

Tragically, the repercussions for victims and their families are severe. When comparing deaths per mile driven, motorcyclists are killed 28 times more often than occupants of passenger cars. Motorcycle deaths climbed by 82{1370d1a44a2a36111fd8aac2ccbc5aad49bce4f615ec80e8124ffd285aa21fc2} from 2000 to 2016, despite the fact that the overall number of riders did not grow by the same proportion.
