Car Accident Statistics in Los Angeles

Multiple factors contribute to automotive crashes in the city, and some routes have the greatest rate of deaths and injuries. After gathering and analyzing data to identify these danger zones, municipal officials devised a plan concentrating on around 500 kilometers of roadways.

The growing number of vehicles on Los Angeles roadways leads to the growth in traffic accidents. The Transportation Department reports that car sales and registrations continue to rise in Southern California, in part due to the region’s stronger economy and low gas prices. In addition, technology such as satellite radios, mobile devices, and navigation systems are causing a rise in distracted driving among drivers. Despite laws restricting cell phone use for talking and texting, distracted driving remains the leading cause of motor accidents in the state.

Numerous road accidents are mostly caused by excessive speed. At issue is whether a state regulation barring the deployment of radar devices to identify speeding cars prior to the completion of traffic studies revealing speeding patterns hinders the Los Angeles Police Department’s enforcement operations. The number of yearly speeding penalties fell from 100,000 in 2010 to about 17,000 in 2015.
